English: Writing
We love writing at Elms Farm
English is an essential subject at school to enable pupils to leave as successful readers and writers. These are key life skills which will enable our pupils to succeed beyond their primary school life.
We adopt the Talk for Writing Approach which has been specifically chosen to support the development of vocabulary and the understanding of text structures. It is an approach which our children love as they imitate stories and use the structure to create their own writing.
Our English curriculum is tightly linked to our wider curriculum. A wide range of key texts have been planned throughout our wider curriculum to provide our learners with an understanding of context. These are also linked to our key writing units, which include a progressive plan of text types.
Raising standards in Writing is a key focus area for our school. We have high expectations for our young writers, providing them with the opportunity to master writing across a range of genres. Where possible, we enhance our English curriculum through The Arts, using drama and speaking & listening to support the development of ideas, exploration of vocabulary and understanding of grammatical structure.
Our Long-Term Plan is focused around 'Key Objectives' that we expect pupils to master by the end of each year group. We also use 'Unacceptable Errors' to minimise repeated errors in our writing.

Writing Across the Curriculum
Writing is planned throughout our curriculum to enable our pupils to apply and present their ideas (an important life skill). Our children love writing in their Topic lessons; in fact, they tell us that this is one of the main things that they love!
